The owner of Diamonds Steak and Seafood in downtown Howell confirmed Wednesday morning that he has purchased the nearby Mr. B’s Rustic Tavern.
Adam Merkel, Diamonds chef and owner, said he will spend about a week remodeling the interior of Mr. B’s, which will reopen for business Oct. 22.
“It just seems like a perfect fit for us,” Merkel said. “I’m happy to plant my roots in downtown Howell.”
Merkel and his leadership staff will hold open interviews from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Friday at Mr. B’s at 101 W. Grand River Ave., to increase employee levels from 40 to 80.
Merkel and his parents purchased Diamonds in 2010, with Merkel becoming the sole owner in 2013.
Merkel also hired Craig Myrand, whom he called one of the top-10 chefs in metro Detroit, as Mr. B’s executive chef. His plan for Mr. B’s includes an entirely new concept, fresh look for its interior and a new menu with offerings made from scratch. He’ll also have it completely remodeled and under a new name by early 2016.
Myrand, former executive chef of the successful and popular Bill’s Eat and Drink of Bloomfield Hills, is helping develop Mr. B’s new menu and assisting with the ownership transition.
“We want it just to be a great neighborhood restaurant,” Merkel said. “People will be really excited about what we have to bring to them soon.”
Last week, Merkel promoted Diamonds sous chef Steph Bentley to executive chef of Diamonds, which will remain open and under the same name.
